Beyond the Draft: How AI is Redefining Architectural Practice
3 viewsAbstract
The rapid integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into architectural practice marks a significant shift from traditional digital modeling to advanced, collaborative workflows, fundamentally altering how architects design, think, and operate. Addressing a gap in current literature regarding professional perception, this qualitative study investigates how practicing architects view AI's impact on their daily workflows, creative processes, and overall professional identity. Through semi-structured interviews with professionals across diverse firm sizes, the research reveals that while AI significantly enhances efficiency, rapid iteration, and early-stage visualization, it is cautiously embraced as a supportive tool rather than an autonomous creator. The findings highlight a critical transformation in the architect's role, transitioning from traditional creator to a crucial editor and decision-maker who guides machine-generated outputs with expert judgment. Ultimately, the study concludes that AI will not replace human expertise; rather, its responsible integration will redefine the profession by augmenting creativity and demanding new standards of accountability, authorship, and ethical oversight.
