Generative AI and Smart Contract Automation in Credit Risk Assessment: Streamlining Commercial Loan Underwriting, Mitigating Default Exposure, and Enhancing Capital Allocation
0 viewsAbstract
Through this study, I examine how integrating Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI), Natural Language Processing (NLP) automation, and smart contracts deployed on permissioned distributed ledgers can transform commercial credit risk assessment and loan underwriting. Traditional banking credit evaluations rely on periodic financial statement analyses, manual underwriting protocols, and retrospective debt-servicing reviews—processes known to introduce operational delays, subjective biases, higher transaction costs, and elevated risk of credit default. To address these structural limitations, I conducted a six-month empirical comparative case study across 5,000 commercial lending transactions at a mid-sized commercial bank, operating a traditional underwriting pipeline in parallel with an AI-smart contract credit platform. Five primary key performance indicators (KPIs) were evaluated: commercial loan origination turnaround time, underwriting error rate, portfolio audit/review hours, early-warning default detection accuracy, and monthly loan origination/monitoring costs. The findings demonstrate substantial performance gains in the technology-enabled environment: loan origination time was reduced by 78%, underwriting error rates dropped by 77%, quarterly credit audit hours decreased by 47%, early-warning default detection accuracy improved by +28 percentage points, and overall monthly credit administration costs fell by 41%. The implications suggest that real-time financial monitoring via AI and automated smart contract covenant execution can significantly enhance bank capital efficiency and risk management, though initial integration costs and regulatory compliance framework uncertainties remain critical considerations for industry-wide adoption.
