Artificial Intelligence and Predictive Analytics in Retail Customer Relationship Management: Forecasting Demand, Reducing Customer Churn, and Improving Sales Performance
0 viewsAbstract
Through this study I try to figure out whether artificial intelligence (AI) and predictive analytics can actually change the way retail businesses forecast demand and keep hold of their customers, compared to the old way of just going off experience. Retail planning today, in most places, still comes down to a spreadsheet, a manager's gut feeling, and a sales review every couple of weeks, and that combination tends to produce forecasting mistakes, missed churn warning signs, and inventory or staffing decisions that are more reactive than planned. This study checks whether an AI-driven customer relationship management (CRM) system can do better on forecasting accuracy, churn, and sales efficiency than that. I ran two systems side by side for four months across branches of a mid-sized retail chain: the usual manual reporting and planning process on one side, and an AI platform combining demand forecasting with a churn-prediction model built off customer purchase history on the other. Five things were tracked across about 40,000 transactions and 12,000 loyalty-program profiles: forecast accuracy, churn rate, staff scheduling efficiency, promotional campaign conversion, and monthly revenue lost to stockouts. The AI-driven branches came out ahead on all five: forecast accuracy was up 34%, churn dropped 41%, scheduling efficiency rose 22%, campaign conversion improved 27%, and stockout losses fell 58%. What this suggests is that predictive AI, once it's actually built into day-to-day retail operations, can genuinely help with keeping customers and planning better. That said, the data-quality requirements and the upfront cost of getting a decent customer data pipeline running are still real obstacles, especially for smaller retailers who don't already have clean loyalty data.
