This case study evaluates Microsoft Corporation's financial performance before and after the rapid commercial rise of generative artificial intelligence. The analysis uses audited and officially reported annual data for fiscal years 2020 through 2026. Fiscal years 2020-2022 form the pre-expansion period, fiscal year 2023 is treated as a transition year because Microsoft expanded its OpenAI partnership in January 2023, and fiscal years 2024-2026 form the post-expansion period. Revenue, operating income, net income, diluted earnings per share, operating and net margins, research and development, capital expenditure, operating cash flow, and free cash flow are examined through trend and before-after comparisons. Average post-period revenue was 68.6% above the pre-period average; average operating income rose 90.6%, net income rose 81.6%, and diluted earnings per share rose 85.0%. The average operating margin increased from 40.2% to 45.7%, while the average net margin increased from 34.7% to 37.5%. The investment pattern was more mixed. Average research and development spending increased 51.3%, but R&D intensity fell because revenue grew faster. Average capital expenditure increased 275.3%, and capital expenditure intensity rose from 11.7% to 25.3%. Free cash flow remained positive, but the increase in infrastructure spending created a growing cash-flow tradeoff. The findings show that Microsoft's post-2023 period coincided with stronger financial scale and profitability alongside a much heavier commitment to data centers and computing capacity. The design is descriptive and does not claim that AI alone caused the improvement. Cloud growth, pricing, acquisitions, product mix, macroeconomic conditions, and accounting effects remain important alternative explanations.
